Policies
- We need to get back to the basics of running a city!
- 1. Transparency & Clarity - We need an audit of the city - an outside, independent audit. What amount of money is being spent? Where is it going? Where is the accountability? What are the positive (or negative) aspects of money spent? What is the return for the money spent? I spent 14 years working on multi million dollar military construction projects, and years on local hotel construction projects valued at nearly $60 million. I am more than qualified and have the experience to deal with large budgets.
- 2. Development - We need to streamline the process of development and make it responsible. We need sustainable growth - not out of control growth with unintended consequences. The permitting process needs to be streamlined as it is just too difficult to maneuver.
- 3. Safety - We need a police contract. When there is an emergency situation, we need to make sure there is someone to respond. We need to make sure we have enough emergency staff to respond. We need to ensure that we have enough police, firefighters, EMS and call center employees to respond to the needs of the citizens.
- 4. Homeless - This city has spent millions of tax dollars on the homeless, yet we still do not have a clear number of how many are on the streets, or how many have actually been housed and/or become homeless again. The city needs to work with local groups, as well as the county and state to come up with a clear, viable plan for dealing with the homeless. We need to insure that their documents are not "swept" up in clean-up efforts, so that we do not further delay getting them the services they need.
- 5. Experience - Working with the FAA, foreign government officials, and working in many different countries, as well as meetings at the White House certainly qualify me to have the experience needed to deal with local, city, county and state officials. While I have no previous political experience, everyone running for office at one time started out with no political experience. Working in the Air Force for 20 years, and being assigned to the U.S. Army staff while stationed in Honduras was quite the political experience. I worked with the U.S. Embassy on projects and numerous nation building projects while stationed in Honduras.
- 6. Community Involvement - I have been very involved in my community for many years. I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for a number of years, and developed their home maintenance program, where I taught new homeowners how to do basic maintenance around their new homes.
I have been involved with Austin Neighborhoods Council for about 10 years, and am currently the first vice president. I have been the Sector 8 neighborhood representative for the past 5 years.
I was very involved in the Maple Run neighborhood group for many years and now co-host an online neighborhood Facebook page. I have spoken at the Legislature numerous times, meeting with land use committees on issues such as property rights and local control. I was a member of the Project Connect Ambassador's Network (PCAN) for several years prior to the vote on Project and remained on the group afterward.
